New KTM 890 Model Spotted On Test

- New KTM 890 model spotted on test in Europe
- Based on KTM 890 Adventure, new model will extend the 890 family
- Brakes, wheels, tyres shared with KTM 890 Duke, frame with 890 Adv
The KTM 890 range may not be available yet on sale in India, but the 890 models have already made their debut last year, as a follow up to the KTM 790 range. First was the KTM 890 Duke, replacing the KTM 790 Duke, and then two 890 adventure models, S and R, were unveiled. As latest spy shots indicate, KTM seems to be working on expanding the 890 family with a road-oriented, but more upright and sporty middleweight sport touring bike, complete with a half-fairing. So far, it's early days yet to have an official reveal, but we expect the production model to be showcased soon, maybe in a matter of weeks.

The route KTM seems to have followed to make a more practical, everyday touring bike based on the 890 family, is to take the KTM 890 Adventure as a base, and then slim it down. The chassis seen in the bike in the spy shots seems to be from the 890 Adventure, as is the headlight and the sub-frame. While the Adventure has large saddle tanks, which double up for more fuel carrying capacity, as well as keep the centre of mass low, the new model has employed a more traditional single fuel tank, perched on the top of the engine.

The bodywork is different from the KTM 890 Adventure, and will possibly end up making this new bike lighter than the Adventure model. The wheels, tyres, brakes and suspension units seem to be borrowed from the Duke, rather than the 890 Adventure, so this new bike will be focussed on better on-road dynamics. The most prominent change is the switch to 17-inch wheels, compared to the 21-inch and 19-inch of the Adventure models. The suspension is also of shorter travel than the Adventure models, which has resulted in a lower bike. All that's left is for KTM to unveil the production model, which could well position this new bike as a road-oriented touring bike, but with the sharp dynamics of The Scalpel. More details are expected to be announced soon.
