New MG Astor Compact SUV: Engine Specifications & Tech Explained

- The MG Astor is essentially the petrol powered version of the MG ZS EV

Morris Garages India had officially unveiled the new MG Astor compact SUV in India. Expected to be launched sometime during this festive season, the new Astor is essential the petrol ICE or Internal Combustion Engine version of the MG ZS EV, which is already on sale in India. The company had already revealed a bit about the tech-oriented features that will be offered with the Astor, however, now we have finally got to know more about the SUV's engine specifications and all the tech on offer.

Engine & Transmission
As MG had previously confirmed, the new Astor will be a petrol-only SUV, and the carmaker will have two petrol engines on offer. The first one, which is expected to be offered with the lower variants of the car, will be a new 1.5-litre naturally aspirated motor that is tuned to churn out 108 bhp and 144 Nm of peak torque. This engine will come mated to a manual gearbox and an 8-speed CVT or Continuous Variable Transmission.

The MG Astor gets two engine options- 1.4-litre turbo petrol and 1.5-litre petrol.

The MG Astor will so get a more powerful turbo petrol engine, which is likely to be offered with the higher-spec models. The motor is a 1.3-litre turbocharged unit that is tuned to generate 138 bhp and a meaty 220 Nm of peak torque. This engine will come mated to a 6-speed automatic torque converter unit as standard.

Technology On Offer
The SUV employ's the company's new concept of Car-as-a-Platform (CAAP), under which MG plans to offer a range of technology-driven services to its customer using the Astor as a platform. MG Astor hosts subscriptions and services, including maps and navigation with MapMyIndia, Jio connectivity, the first-of-its-kind Blockchain-protected vehicle digital passport by KoineArth and more. The Astor also offers access to music with the JioSaavn app, along with the industry-first feature of reserving a parking slot through a head unit (powered by Park+, select cities to begin with) and access to unlimited information with Wikipedia. Astor also has 80+ internet features, all controlled via the 10.1-inch HD infotainment system.

The new MG Astor will be the first SUV in this segment to get an artificial intelligence or AI-powered personal assistant. The system responds to the wake-up command 'Hello Astor'. In fact, Paralympic athlete and Khel Ratna Awardee Dr. Deepa Malik will be lending her voice to the system. The assistant gets its own display unit that can do a bunch of facial expressions, and it understands natural language and supports up to 35 Hinglish voice commands.

Driver Assistance & Safety Features
The MG Astor also comes with Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) along with Level 2 autonomous technology. MG has partnered with BOSCH for the ADAS, and it comes with AI technology, six radars and five cameras, allowing the SUV to manage 14 advanced autonomous Level 2 features. This include features like - Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Departure Prevention, Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, Automatic Emergency Braking - Pedestrian, Speed Assist System - Speed Warning, Speed Assist System - Manual Mode, Speed Assist System - Intelligent Mode, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Change Assist, Blind Spot Detection, and Intelligent Headlamp Control.

The Astor also comes with 27 standard safety features including - ESP, TCS and HDC. Other safety features include - 6 airbags, an electric parking brake, heated ORVM, rain-sensing wiper, PM 2.5 filter, 360-degree camera, and more.
