Passenger Vehicles Record 41.15 Per Cent Sales Decline In September 2021: SIAM

According to the sales data published by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the passenger vehicle (PV) segment in India recorded a steep decline of 41.15 per cent in September 2021 selling 1,60,070 units as compared to 2,72,027 units sold in the same month a year ago. The passenger cars segment recorded a slump of 60.82 per cent selling 64,235 units in September as against 1,63,981 units sold last year while the utility vehicle (UV) segment recorded a drop of 9.22 per cent selling 96,633 units as compared to 87,720 units. The Vans segment too recorded a decline of 28.89 per cent selling 8,115 units as compared to 11,413 units sold a year ago. In the same month, sales of two wheelers went down by 17.35 per cent selling 15,28,472 units as compared to 18,49,546 units sold in the same month last year.

The drop in sales is primarily attributed to supply constraints due to the ongoing chip shortage globally. That said, sales of passenger vehicles in the July - September 2021 period or Q2 of FY2022 went up by 2.07 per cent selling 741,300 units as compared to 726,232 units in the same period last year. However, two-wheelers sales dropped by 12.29 per cent selling 46,90,565 units as compared to 41,13,916 units sold in the same period a year ago.

Two-wheeler sales too took a hit in September 2021.

In the April - September 2021 period or H1 of FY2022, passenger vehicle segment recorded a healthy growth of 57.68 per cent selling 13,87,570 units as compared to 8,79,966 units. Sales of two-wheelers too went up by 8.89 per cent selling 65,17,616 units as compared to 59,85,074 units sold in the same period a year ago. The growth in quarterly sales is attributed to a low base last year given the nationwide lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
