If there is one motorcycle that has surpassed the legendary status of its brand itself, then it has to be the Royal Enfield Bullet. While the company has launched several new and advanced motorcycles over the years, the Standard Bullet is still the most popular Royal Enfield on sale. The motorcycle is equally popular in the used vehicle market as well, and if you too are planning to buy one, here are some pros and cons you will need to consider first. For this report, we'll be addressing the pros and cons of only the current-gen Bullet that has been on sale in India since 2007.

Pros

  1. The Bullet has a solid road presence and there is no denying that. Royal Enfield has maintained the classic look of the motorcycle and those signature hand-painted gold pinstripes on the black metal still look impressive. If the looks don't get you attention, the thumping sound will.
  2. The Bullet is powered by a 346 cc single cylinder unit construction engine (UCE) with twinspark technology. The motor is tuned to make 19.1 bhp and 28 Nm of peak torque, while mated to a 5-speed gearbox. And pulling power of the bike is certainly impressive.
  3. The Bullet is quite capable of handling different terrains. After all, it's been one of the bikes that have been used the most by people exploring the treacherous terrains of Leh Ladakh.
  4. The more recent Bullets also come with features like fuel injection, disc brakes and ABS.

Cons

  1. The Bullet is certainly built like a tank, and it will feel like one too. The near-full-metal construction of the bike leads to a dry kerb weight of 186 kg, add fuel and oil to it and you'd be nearing the 200 km mark. And that's a lot of weight to carry.
  2. While the Royal Enfield has certainly made several improvements to the current Bullet, the slightly older BS4 and BS3 compliant models weren't the most reliable. So, take a proper test ride and thoroughly inspect the bike for any issues.
  3. The Bullet is a torquey engine with good low- and mid-range performance, but the bike has no top-end performance. After a point, you'd be left wanting more.
  4. Royal Enfield bikes retain a lot of value, so even a used Bullet won't come cheap. Anything that is newer than 2007 will cost you around Rs. 85,000 to Rs. 1.2 lakh, sometimes even more.
