Highlights

  • The Toyota Yaris is an well-built car and gets decent features.
  • The Yaris was a petrol-only car and was discontinued in 2021.
  • You can get a used Toyota Yaris for around Rs. 7.2 lakh to Rs. 10 lakh.

The Toyota Yaris moniker is quite famous in the global markets. However, unlike the global markets, where the Yaris hatchback is more famous, India received a sedan version of the car. However, because there was no diesel option, and the fact that most buyers preferred rivals like the Honda City and Hyundai Verna, the Yaris never saw great success in the Indian market. And almost three and a half years after its launch, the company decided to discontinue the car due to falling sales. However, we think the Yaris sedan was quite a capable car, and you can still get one in the used car market. But before you start looking for one, here are some pros and cons you must consider first.

The Toyota Yaris is a well-built car and comes with good fit and finish inside out. The car feels premium and solid, while the styling too was impressive.

Pros

  1. The Toyota Yaris is a well-built car and comes with good fit and finish inside out. The car feels premium and solid, while the styling too was impressive. The Yaris also offered a spacious and comfortable cabin.
  2. In terms of features, the Yaris was well-loaded, offering segment-first features like air gestures. The car also came with a 7-inch touchscreen system with access to Wi-Fi, navigation and Mirrorlink, a multi-functional steering wheel, ambient lighting and roof-mounted air vents. And these were available from the second variant and above.
  3. The Yaris also came with an impressive list of safety features like dual airbags, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist as standard, while the higher variants get 7 airbags, Hill Start Assist Control as well as Vehicle Stability Control. The Yaris sedan also scored a 5-star safety rating in the ASEAN NCAP crash tests.

The quality of some of the cabin parts could certainly have been better. Especially the quality of the plastic parts.

Cons

  1. The Yaris was only offered with a petrol engine, and it was not very spirited, especially the automatic version, which came with a CVT unit, and it wasn’t very responsive either. The 6-speed manual is the better variant to drive as the gear changes prompt some quick action.
  2. While the space inside the cabin was certainly impressive, the quality of some of the parts could certainly have been better. Especially the quality of the plastic parts.
  3. While the Yaris was on sale for 3 years, it wasn’t a volume player so, there will be very limited options available in the used car space. And even if you find one it won’t be very cheap, as we don’t think you’ll find a good one below Rs. 7 lakh.
