3D Printing: A Revolution For Cars

- French innovators must be thanked for the concept of 3D printing.
- There are various program modes available for different 3D printers.
- The other name for 3D printing is Additive Manufacturing.
3D printers have been around for some time now, but their popularity has only skyrocketed in recent years. These printers have captivated the imagination of innovators and developers in the automobile industry with their innumerable capabilities. The automotive sector entities that require loads of parts and products have been using 3D printers to their advantage. These printers are being used for expediting manufacturing processes that might otherwise take months on normal machinery. Moreover, the accuracy and precision offered by 3D printers are amazing.

What is 3D printing?
The name itself is an indicator of what this process is. This is the process by which an idea can be given a physical form and introduced to the world! Although, originally, manufacturing complicated products and parts through 3D printing was somewhat theoretical and tedious with certain refinements, these printers are leading the way into the future of manufacturing and designing.

Ways the 3D printer is changing the automotive industry
- Ease of prototyping: Originally, prototyping was time-consuming and had to go through multiple iterations. With the help of 3D printers, even the smallest of prototypes can be easily manufactured efficiently. Multiple changes are much easier to perform now.
- Creating custom and complex parts: The industry has been looking for ways to easily manufacture complex parts that require months of manufacturing. With 3D printers, these complex parts can be made with greater precision. In addition, custom parts can help brands separate themselves from the crowd. From wheel designs to dashboard customizations, 3D printers have paved the way for these to become a reality.
- Production of manufacturing aids: The operation of various manufacturing items can be risky and costly. However, with the help of 3D printers, excellent support can be provided to people operating these machines. Thereby these printers help reduce the workload of the operators and make the production process much faster.
- Square Parts: Spare parts have been a big problem that the automotive industry has been dealing with for a while. The designs can be replicated with the help of CAD software, and then 3D printers can bring those parts into the real world. Its cost-efficient and easier for the manufacturers.
- 3D printed cars: The production of fully 3D-printed cars is still a possibility of the distant future, but the idea is very much within the realm of possibility. 3D printers can print not only individual parts but also entire car frames!

Brands at the forefront of this technology
Some of the global brands that are taking the automobile industry into the era of 3D printing are: -
- Urbee: The first car to have a fully 3D printed body (a small one indeed).
- Rimac Automobili: Major supplier of propulsion systems.
- Ford: Brake pad components as well as aerodynamic kits for more safety.
- Bugatti: Exhaust covers as well as braking pad systems.
- Porsche: Release levers for clutches as well as seat prototypes. Production of pistons in engines as well.
- Czinger: Making parts like chassis, suspension, and company with contracts for other companies.
With the rapid pace at which 3D printing is integrating with the automobile industry, the future is set for some interesting innovations that will redefine how manufacturing processes will be completed.
