Automated Manual Transmission Explained

With technological development the need for manual inputs is reducing, even in the auto industry. Modern cars are able to carry on with essential functions like opening the gate automatically. One such function that is gaining popularity is called Automatic Manual Transmission. This technology makes driving safer and assists the driver in tough terrains. Let's dive deeper into this technology and its benefits.

What is Automatic Manual Transmission?
AMT or Automatic manual transmission denotes a transmission where the systems and mechanisms are closely built like manual transmission. However, the clutch and the gears operate automatically, reducing the driver's effort to change gears and operate the clutch. Many versions of the same technology are semi-automatic and operate either the clutch or the gear stick. Such systems require the driver's full control to operate properly. Modern versions of the same technology come with fully automatic functioning. Here, the gears and clutch operate as per the terrain. This helps the driver focus only on the terrain which is beneficial while off-roading.

How does this technology work?
There are many mechanisms that help the clutch and the gear operate freely. The most common ones include- hydraulic or electro-hydraulic actuation, electro-mechanical, pneumatic, electromagnetic, or even purely electrical by means of an electric motor.
- In an automatic manual transmission gear shifting, clutch actuation, shift timing and rev matching all fall under automatic transmission. The driver selects the gear that he wants to put in with the transmission shift lever. Electronic sensors connecting to the transmission shift lever send instructions to a TCU or transmission computer or microprocessor which automatically adjusts the clutch to match the throttle and can also re-engage the clutch in milliseconds.
- The torque and power transfer to the wheels of the vehicle are also controlled automatically. With changing gears, the power changes.
- In many cars the shifting of the gears is limited to the immediate next gear- higher or lower. However, in uber-modern cars like BMW, the gears can freely shift to any number. Such cars have the transmission shift lever on the steering wheel for convenience.
