Maserati MC20 Cielo Debuts As Firm's New Open-Top Supercar

- MC20 Cielo carries forward the Nettuno V6 from the Coupe
- Weighs 64 kg more than its Coupe sibling
- Folding roof features a electrochromic glass panel
Maserati has revealed the new MC20 Cielo – the drop-top Spyder derivative of its MC20 mid-engine supercar. The second derivative of the company's new flagship supercar, the Cielo uses the same Nettuno V6 as the coupe, with the folding roof adding another 65 kg to the overall weight. The highlight of the Cielo though is its roof which other than folding also features an electrochromic glass panel allowing drivers to enjoy pseudo-open-top motoring even with the roof up. The Cielo is the second of three variants the company planned for the MC20 with an all-electric Folgore too on the cards in the coming years.
In terms of looks, the MC 20 Cielo retains the low and flowing proportions of the Coupe with the most notable distinction being the roof and rear deck. The Cielo drops the raked rear window with the Maserati emblem favouring a flatter deck cover embossed with the Maserati Trident and raised buttresses that house the folding roof. The air vents above the rear wheel arches too have been redesigned. The cabin too carries forward unchanged from the coupe.

The MC20 Cielo retains the butterfly doors of the Coupe; New rear deck cover the most notable change in design
Shifting the focus to the roof, Maserati says that it can be folded and deployed in a quick 12 seconds with the electrochromic glass panel letting users enjoy the open sky without needing to lower the roof. The feature, called ‘sky feeling' by Maserati uses polymer-dispersed liquid crystal technology to adjust the opaqueness of the glass panel to let users enjoy a clear view of the sky. This similar technology has been used by other luxury car manufacturers before including Mercedes-Benz which labels its tech Magic Sky Control.

Cielo gets a new rear deck cover with the Maserati logo; Gold detailing exclusive to the PrimaSerie Launch Edition.
Moving to the engine, there is little change here with the familiar Nettuno V6. The 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged unit belts out 621 bhp and 720 Nm with Maserati claiming a sub 2.9 second sprint to 100 kmph.
The MC 20 Cielo will go on sale in international markets in the coming months starting with a limited run PrimaSerie Launch Edition. The launch edition will be available in a unique three-layer Acquamarine colour from Maserati's Fuoriserie customisation program and ice-coloured interior upholstery.
