The Audi Q7 will be the first model from the Volkswagen Group to offer a plug-in hybrid diesel powertrain. The new-generation of the Q7 will make its debut next year and the company will bring it out in both the petrol and diesel variants.

There is also the plug-in diesel variant which will go on sale in Europe and then the US. The Q7 will be the second car to get the plug-in hybrid diesel engine; the first one of course was from the Swedish car manufacturer Volvo. The Volvo V60 with the plug-in hybrid diesel system sold more than 10000 units last year and one can understand why Audi took an interest in this segment.

Both its rivals - Mercedes-Benz and BMW currently offer a plug-in hybrid petrol variant but Audi will be the first among the lot to come out with the diesel. This does give Audi a technology edge and hence will have the distinction of being the first to adapt to this technology.

We expect the drivetrain to be the combination of the 3.0-liter V-6 diesel and an electric motor. Since it is a plug-in, the Q7 will be a low emission car and expect the diesel to be big on mileage too. Audi might not have the 'i' brand like BMW but it is sure working towards finding its footing in this competitive market.
