- The new gen Mercedes-Benz GLS will be underpinned by the MHA platform
- The new GLS is expected to get a plug-in hybrid version making 400 bhp
- The new gen GLS could get a super luxurious Maybach version as well
The Mercedes-Benz GLS is one of the more popular luxury SUVs world over and will be moving to its next generation sometime in 2019. With the model essentially the S-Class of Mercedes' SUV family, there are a lot of hopes from the next generation model that is expected to pack in a lot tech wizardry and innovation over the current model. Giving a glimpse of the same, the next generation Mercedes-Benz GLS was recently spied testing trying to hide its bold new look behind camouflage. The new GLS will see massive upgrades including semi-autonomous driving tech and a plug-in hybrid version as well.

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS will be based on the new MHA platform that will bring several changes on the structural front of the SUV. Expect to see a massive reduction in weight while improved structural rigidity as well, while the luxury SUV will be able to pack in more technologies over the current model. Much like the current model, expect the new GLS to be a seven-seater, albeit with more liberated space and creature comforts. Mercedes is also likely to incorporate semi-autonomous driving tech from the S-Class and E-Class on the new GLS.

Visually, the camouflaged test mule shows a bulky and imposing design on the Mercedes-Benz GLS with a massive grille up front, flanked by the elegant headlamps on either side. The bonnet too boasts of an enormous bulge reminiscent of what we saw on the X-Class concept. The test mule seems to carry similar dimensions as the current GLS.
With respect to the powertrain, expect to see a range of petrol and diesel engine options on the new generation Mercedes-Benz GLS while there will be a plug-in hybrid version as well. Reports suggest of a 3-litre petrol paired to an electric motor making it to the new GLS with nearly 400 bhp of power. Other upgrades will include a more powerful AMG version with the new 4-litre bi-turbo V8.
(The new Mercedes GLS will compete with the Audi Q7, Volvo XC90 and upcoming BMW X7
Rumours also suggest a more luxurious Maybach version of the new GLS will also be in the offing to take on the new line-up of super luxurous SUVs. The Mercedes-Maybach GLS will take on the Range Rover SV Autobiogaphy, Bentley Bentayga and the likes. Meanwhile, the standard new gen Mercedes-Benz GLS will take on the Audi Q7, Volvo XC90 and the upcoming BMW X7 three-row SUVs.
