Nissan Shows Big Improvement In Crash Safety; 4 Star Result For Magnite

Nissan Shows Big Improvement In Crash Safety; 4 Star Result For Magnite
Key Highlights
  • The Nissan Magnite scored 4 stars for adult occupant protection.
  • Nissan Magnite scored 2 stars for child occupant safety.
  • The model tested is the base variant as is the case with all NCAP tests.

The Nissan Magnite subcompact SUV has been crash tested by Global NCAP. And the result is a competent 4-Star rating for the popular model. The Magnite arrived in India at the very end of 2020. And the model tested is the base variant as is the case with all NCAP tests. The Nissan Magnite has achieved a good 4-stars for adult occupant protection with an 11.85 score on a maximum 17 points. The car was tested in a frontal offset crash test at 64 kmph, and there was no side impact test. There is a concern on the level of injury seen on the driver side dummy's chest area, however. On chid occupant protection, the Magnite's score is low at just 2 stars, and the key reason is the lack of ISOFIX child seat restraints in the rear (in the entry variant).

Alejandro Furas, Global NCAP Secretary General said, "This is an important milestone moment for our crash testing in India, with fifty models tested to date. There has been significant progress on vehicle safety design since we began our tests in 2014 but, as we see from our latest results, there is still more to be done to achieve the high safety standards that consumers in India rightly demand.

The Nissan Magnite also lost points over for the lack of electronic stability control (ESC), a lap seatbelt instead of a three-point system for the rear middle passenger and no side head impact protection as standard. The Magnite's shell structure though got a stable rating. For Nissan though this is the best showing so far at Global NCAP. It has been a torrid history with the Datsun GO scoring zero stars in 2014. The Datsun redi-GO then scored one star in 2019. The red-GO is also built off the CMF-A platform like the Magnite, Renault Kwid, Triber, and Kiger. Datsun is a subsidiary of Nissan, and its models are manufactured and marketed by Nissan India. The Magnite was originally designed and intended to be launched as the Datsun GO-Cross - hence the significance of its crash performance is big. The Magnite's twin car - Renault Kiger has also achieved a similar result in the same type of test.

Despite a stable shell structure the Magnite lost points for lack of ESC, and for not having a 3-point seatbelt for the rear middle passenger and no side head impact protection as standard

Global NCAP began testing made-in-India cars in late 2013. Ever since the Safer Cars for India programme began, Indian vehicle safety standards have gone up. From no airbags as standard, to a driver side airbag, there is now a dual front airbag requirement. Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has recently talked about proposing a mandatory 6 airbags as standard rule, besides addition of other equipment like ESC in cars.
