After a series of research and tests, the supervisory board of Porsche AG has finally approved the company's Mission E project, for manufacturing its first 100% electrically powered sports car. Giving the green light to this exceptional project, Dr. Oliver Blume, Chairman, Executive Board quoted it as "beginning a new chapter in the history of the sports car".

According to Porsche, the new Mission E project will be launched around the end of this decade, in 2020. In its official statement, the company claims that with the Mission E project, Porsche is continuing to get back sustainable growth. Moreover, for this project Porsche will be making an investment of up to 1 Billion Euros and in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen alone the company will create opportunities for over 1000 new jobs.

Initially the company will be investing around 700 Million Euros in the main manufacturing facility, which will be followed by a new assembly plant and a new paint shop over the next few years. Additionally, Porsche is currently planning to expand its existing engine plant in order to manufacture electric motors for Mission E project.

Coming to the car itself, Porsche first showcased the Mission E concept at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show back in September this year. The concept car was a four door model with stylish seating for four individuals and featured a newly developed electric drive system. The system featured two permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) to power the sports car and recover braking energy. According to Porsche, the car is capable of producing a maximum of 590 bhp and can do a 0 - 100 kmph sprint in mere 3.5 seconds.

The car has a maximum range of 500 Km and is powered by an all-new 800-volt charger unit specially developed for Mission E project. The unit is twice as powerful compared to the modern units that operate at 400-volts. Moreover, despite of having twice as powerful system, the Mission E car is claimed to have shorter charging times and lower weight with lighter, smaller gage copper cables. The battery can be charged to approximately 80% in just around 15 minutes.
