Porsche To Celebrate 70th Anniversary In 2018

- Porsche will celebrate its 70th anniversary on June 8, 2018
- The first Porsche 356 'No. 1' Roadster was registered on the same day
- The Porsche 356 gave way to the the 550 and the Porsche 911
Ferdinand Porsche, the man responsible for the Volkswagen Beetle started his own automotive company post the second world war and the rest, as we know it, is history. Porsche will celebrate its 70th anniversary on June 8, 2018, marking the day the first ever Porsche 356 'No. 1' Roadster was registered as an automobile. The 356, of course, is one of the most legendary sportscars ever made - even with its tiny engine - and gave birth to legends like the 550 and of course, the Porsche 911. And to mark its 70th year as an automaker, Porsche will most likely launch the production version of the much awaited Mission E sedan. The Mission E will be the first fully electric production car from Porsche.

The evolutions of the Porsche 911
Incidentally, this isn't the first time a car bearing the Porsche name and having an all-electric and all-wheel-drive motor will be launched. Dr. Ferdinand Porsche had actually designed an electric car with four individual hub motors way back in the year 1900 making it the first all-wheel-drive car too. The Lohner-Porsche as it was called also gave rise to the likes of a hybrid version later on, which had a mixture of electric motors and a conventional petrol engine. And all this when the world was still flying around in triplanes and watching movies with no semblance of audio in it!

Porsche 914 was mocked as being too slow
While the Porsche 356 gave way to the Porsche 911, there have been some other very significant cars in the Porsche lineup that also deserve a second look. The 914, for example, was mocked as being too slow and having an engine from a van but it brought a whole range of new owners to the Porsche brand - similar to what the likes of the Boxster and the Cayman did years ago. And then, of course, there was the Cayenne. Called the variety of names across the years, the Cayenne is the definition of the term SUV giving rise to whole new substrata of SUV with even more luxury and even more performance than one could imagine.

Porsche has planned several global activities around the world
Coming back to the 70th birthday and all the celebrations that go along with it, Porsche has planned several global activities around the world. From a special display of cars at the world famous Petersen Museum in Los Angeles to the special events in Zuffenhausen and California and a tribute at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, to drives and meetups of several Porsche clubs around the world. And to celebrate the much-loved brand, we here at CarAndBike promise to bring you some lovely stories - both from India and around the world too. So stay tuned!
