Royal Enfield, Honda Post Record Sales Numbers In April

- Honda sells over 5.7 lakh two-wheelers in April
- Hero MotoCorp sells 5.9 lakh two-wheelers

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India, and Royal Enfield led two-wheeler sales in April, with both companies posting record sales figures for a single month. HMSI registered 34 per cent growth in April, the highest-ever growth in a single month, while Royal Enfield grew by over 25 per cent. In April, Royal Enfield sold its highest numbers of motorcycles in a single month, crossing sales of 60,000 bikes for the first time ever. Royal Enfield motorcycles with engine capacity of up to 350 cc sold the most, accounting for 56,349 units out of a total of 60,142 bikes sold in April.

Hero MotoCorp still holds the first position in overall sales volume, selling 5.9 lakh two wheelers in April, led by robust sales of Hero's commuter motorcycles including the Hero Splendor and Hero HF Deluxe models. Honda still lags behind Hero, but is inching closer and closer to the world's largest two-wheeler manufacturer by volume. Honda sold 5.7 lakh two-wheelers in April 2017, compared to Hero's sales of 5.9 lakh two-wheelers. Hero MotoCorp sales slid 3.4 per cent over the same month last year, when the company sold 6.12 lakh two-wheelers. Honda's overall sales are led by a 40 per cent growth in scooter sales. In all, Honda sold 3.5 lakh scooters in April, led by the best-selling Honda Activa. Honda also sold over 1.8 lakh motorcycles in the domestic market.

TVS Motor Company also registered growth numbers of 8 per cent in April 2017. Overall, TVS sold 2.4 lakh two-wheelers in April, from 2.2 lakh two-wheelers a year ago. Backed by strong sales of its scooters, TVS sold 81,443 scooters in April 2017, a growth of 28.6 per cent from 63,341 scooters sold in the same month a year ago. Motorcycle sales accounted for 99,890 units in April 2017, up from 90,491 units a year ago.

Suzuki Gixxer Special Edition
Looking at pure growth numbers, Suzuki Motorcycle India Private Limited also registered strong 43 per cent increase in overall sales for April 2017. In the domestic market, Suzuki sold 36,289 two-wheelers as against 25,343 two-wheelers sold in the previous calendar year. Suzuki sales are being led by the company's popular 155 cc Suzuki Gixxer motorcycle and 125 ccc Suzuki Access scooter. Suzuki's exports from India also grew from 5,290 units a year ago to 7,535 units in April. Meanwhile, Yamaha also registered a growth of 8 per cent in domestic sales in April, selling 68,827 two-wheelers, compared to 63,927 two-wheelers sold in the same month a year ago. Yamaha's growth is led by healthy sales of scooters, led by the Yamaha Fascino.
Bajaj however posted negative growth in domestic motorcycle sales in April. In the domestic market, Bajaj sold 1,61,930 motorcycles, a drop of 19 per cent over the 2,00,433 motorcycles sold a year ago. Bajaj exports however grew by an impressive 44 per cent, to 1,32,002 motorcycles from 91,465 bikes in April 2016. Overall, Bajaj two-wheeler sales remained flat in April.
