Skoda Kylaq Petrol Automatic: Real-World Fuel Efficiency Tested

- The Skoda claims Kylaq's fuel efficiency is up to 19.68 kmpl
- In our test, the Skoda Kylaq gave us a city mileage of 9 kmpl
- During the highway run we got a mileage of 19.4 kmpl
The Skoda Kylaq is one of the better driver’s cars you can buy under the Rs. 15 lakh mark. It’s compact, powerful, and gets all the essential creature comforts and tech. Essentially a wholesome product. While performance has always been a plus point for VW Group cars, what they have been notorious for is fuel economy. Now, Skoda claims the new Kylaq subcompact SUV is different. It claims that the SUV is not just frugal to maintain but can also offer a fuel efficiency of 19.05 kmpl (automatic) and 19.68 kmpl (manual). So, we decided to put this claim to the test.

Now the Skoda Kylaq the company sent us was the automatic version of the SUV's top-spec Prestige variant. The AT used here is a 6-speed torque converter unit, paired with a 1.0-litre TSI turbo petrol engine that makes 114 bhp and 178 Nm of peak torque. The Kylaq comes with a 45-litre fuel tank and has a maximum kerb weight of 1255 kg, and the gross weight of this top-spec vehicle can go up to 1660 kg.
To get an accurate figure, we tested the Skoda Kylaq both in city conditions as well as the highway and took out an average. Now the city loop is the one we always use for fuel runs, and it is an 83 km loop. The tank was filled up to the brim and driven on this predetermined loop, at speeds of up to 50-60 kmph with the low points being 20-30 kmph. At the end of the cycle, the total fuel consumed was 9.3 litres, which gives us a city fuel economy of just about 9 kmpl.

| Real-World Highway Fuel Efficiency | 19.4 kmpl |
| Real-World Fuel Efficiency (Average) | 14 kmpl |
| Real-World Distance To Empty | 675 km |
The parameters set for the highway testing were largely similar, the only difference being that the speeds were kept between 85-100 kmph. The total distance covered here was 94 km and the total fuel consumed was 5.3 litres, which gives us a highway fuel economy of 19.4 kmpl. Now, this is more than the claimed mileage of the automatic petrol variant.

Now, the character of Skoda Kylaq’s 1.0-litre engine is such that it loves to be pushed and likes the open stretch of roads. What it doesn’t like is stop-and-go traffic and that is why the fuel efficiency in the city alone is just average.
However, the mileage we received on the highway tells us that it can be frugal while being fun to drive. And if your daily route has a good mix of traffic and open roads, then you can achieve a real-world fuel economy of 14-15 kmpl, which for a petrol car is quite good.
