Stellantis Takes No. 2 Spot Ahead of Tesla For EV Sales In Europe in Jan-June 2022

While revealing its half-yearly financial results, Stellantis revealed that it was number 2 in Europe in terms of sales of battery electric vehicles. While Stellantis did not reveal any numbers, a report by Automotive News Europe revealed that the company had sold a little over 1.05 lakh electric vehicles in Europe, about 11,000 behind the VW Group which leads European EV sales. In the process, the company bypassed EV giant Tesla who sold 78,277 units in the same period.
The data was reportedly sourced Dataforce, a data provider, and included details for the EU, UK, Switzerland, Iceland and Norway though data from Portugal, Sweden and Finland was not available.

As per a report, while Stellantis took the number 2 position for EV sales, the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 remained Europe's best selling EVs
However, while Stellantis outperformed Tesla in the European market, the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 remained the best-selling EVs in Europe based on Dataforce numbers selling 39,969 units and 38,280 units. Stellantis’ Fiat 500 EV and Peugeot 208 came in at third and fourth respectively while the VW Group’s Skoda Enyaq was fifth overall.
The report by Automotive News Europe cited several reasons for Stellantis’ rise to second place including the COVID-19 lockdowns in China affecting Tesla’s production numbers and Stellantis benefitting from a strong market performance in the second quarter. Stellantis also received a boost from the sale of electric vans with many no longer available as conventional internal combustion models.
Tesla however is expected to rebound in the second half of the year with production set to ramp up in Germany and easing restrictions in China.
