Tesla Claims Its Battery Packs Lose 10% Capacity Post 360,000 Km

Tesla has made a bold claim about the long lasting ability of its battery packs. It has claimed that the battery pack only loses 10 per cent capacity even after the 360,000 kilometres which is insane as that would likely be more than the full mileage of the vehicle itself. Battery degradation is a huge issue with electric cars as that impacts the life of the car itself and range of the vehicle which is a huge factor in popularisation of electric vehicles. Tesla has updated this stat for this year as it launched new iterations of the Model S and Model X which now retain 90 per cent of the capacity even after 360,000 kilometres.

"Tesla's battery packs are designed to outlast the vehicle. We estimate that a vehicle gets scrapped after approximately 200,000 miles of usage in the U.S. and roughly 150,000 miles in Europe," Tesla has said officially. This variance between the US and Europe is also perhaps because of supply chain issues as different vendors are being used in different continents and also the weather conditions as Europe has colder climate which impacts battery life more negatively.

Tesla's figures also corroborate real world usage which claims that battery packs have higher degradation in the first 160,000 kilometres and then the process slows down.
