Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster: All You Need To Know

Triumph Motorcycles took the wraps of the latest model in its modern classic series - the Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster on October 3 at the British motorcycle manufacturer's headquarters in Hinckley. The Speedmaster is based on the Triumph Bonneville Bobber, but gets cruiser styling with more relaxed ergonomics, including swept back handlebars, forward-set footpegs, and a host of rider aid technology. It's essentially still a Bonneville at heart, sharing the 1200 cc liquid-cooled, parallel-twin engine with the Triumph Bonneville T120. Here's a look at everything there's to know about the new Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster.

1. What does it look like?

The Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster borrows several factory custom features of the Bonneville Bobber including the signature hard-tail look, minimal bodywork, classic 'drum brake' inspired rear wheel hub, and slashed cut exhausts. The Speedmaster incorporates the timeless Bonneville character and design DNA, with its classic silhouette, machined engine cooling fins, retro-themed carb-style throttle body covers, rubber fork gaiters and high-level finish on the badging, brushed engine covers and special bronze 1200HT badges. It's got the bobbed-look, but designed to give this Bonneville a laid-back, relaxed two-up riding experience with long distance cruising ability.

2. How does it perform?

The Bonneville Speedmaster is powered by the same engine as the Bonneville Bobber and the Bonneville T120. But there are minor differences. The high-torque, 1200 cc parallel-twin engine of the Speedmaster makes 76 bhp of power at 6,100 rpm and 106 Nm of peak torque at 4,000 rpm. According to Triumph, the Speedmaster makes up to 10 per cent more torque at 4,500 rpm than the Bonneville T120, and 2 per cent more peak torque. But there's also the weight; at 245.5 kg dry weight, the Speedmaster is also the heaviest in the Bonneville series. Of course, Triumph says it has the signature handling of all Triumph bikes, so we expect it to be neutral and easy to ride.

3. What kind of technology does it have?

The Bonneville Speedmaster gets a host of hi-tech rider-focussed technology. There's standard ABS, switchable traction control, ride-by-wire with a choice of two riding modes (Road and Rain), as well as a torque-assist clutch for a light feel at the lever. It also gets a single-button cruise control and an engine immobiliser.

4. Anything else?

The Bonneville Speedmaster gets 16-inch, classic 32-spoke wire wheels fitted with specially developed Avon Cobra tyres. The fuel tank gets 12-litre capacity providing more range, and Triumph claims fuel consumption figures of over 23 kmpl. Brakes also get an improvement with twin 310 mm discs at the front, gripped by Brembo 2-piston floating calipers at the front. At the rear is a single 255 mm disc, gripped by a Nissin single piston caliper. The twin seat arrangement has a removable pillion seat, and low rider seat of 710 mm. The pillion seat along with the chrome grab rail can be easily removed to create a distinctive single-seat set up.

5. How much will it cost?

The Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster will be launched sometime in early 2018, in all probability, before March 2018. Triumph says the Speedmaster will be the most affordable cruiser in the Triumph motorcycle line-up. So, expect prices to be around Rs. 10-11 lakh (ex-showroom) once it's launched in India. The Speedmaster is available in two custom kits - Maverick and Highway, and comes with over 130 original accessories for further customisation.
