Volvo To Launch A New EV Every Year From 2022; To Become All Electric Car Company By 2030

Volvo Cars India has reiterated the company's plan to become a fully electric car company by 2030, as part of its ambitious climate plan. The company had first made the announcement to go completely electric by 2030 in March 2021. Today, at the virtual launch of the petrol mild-hybrid version of the 2021 S90 sedan and XC60 SUV in India, the Chinese-owned Swedish carmaker said that it will launch a new electric car in India every year from 2022 onwards to achieve its goal. The first electric vehicle from the company will be the Volvo XC40 Recharge, which will arrive early next year.

It was in 2017 that Volvo Cars first announced that from 2019, all its new models will include an electric motor in their powertrain. The company had also said that it will launch 4 electrified models in the market by 2021. While the company did launch the XC90 Plug-in Hybrid, and now we also have the S60 and XC60 mild-hybrid models, Volvo is now focusing on bringing in fully electric cars to India.

Globally, the company has already gearing up to introduce the C40 Recharge, which will also come to India later

Initially, the company was expected to launch the Volvo XC40 Recharge in India by October this year. However, due to the challenges caused by the pandemic and the global chip shortage, earlier in August the company said that it will now launch the XC40 Recharge in the first quarter of the 2022 calendar year. Globally, the company has already launched the XC40 Recharge and is now gearing up to introduce the C40 Recharge, which will also come to India in the future.

As for the upcoming Volvo XC40, the electric SUV comes with a dual-motor powertrain with 150 kW electric motors on each axle that converts to 402 bhp and 660 Nm of peak torque. The electric motors are powered by a 78 kWh battery pack that offers an approximate range of up to 418 km. It can achieve 0-100 kmph in 4.9 seconds.
