2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Unveiled

We've been waiting for a long time for Mercedes-Benz to bring this one out into the open. In fact we've been following its development right from the time the company first teased the car and now it's finally here. The 2019 G-Class features a number of substantial updates over its predecessor, the iconic Gelandewagen largely stays the course.
The 2019 G-Class comes with smoother surfaces and re-shaped head lamps and tail lamps, slimmer front blinkers and of course new wheels. It has also grown in size when compared to its predecessor and is now 53 mm longer, 121 mm wider and close to 8 mm taller. This of course translates to more room inside the car as well as the wheelbase too has gone up by nearly 40 mm. The rear seats have been repositioned so that the passengers have an additional leg room of 152 mm and that's quite a lot.

The cabin is all new and every surface is new, with a design that's both familiar and upscale. The first thing you notice is the expansive digital display that extends from behind the steering wheel all the way out to the centre stack. This is a set up similar to the one we've seen on the E- and S-Class which houses two 12.3-inch high resolution screens.

Features-wise, the touch-sensitive Touch Control Buttons on the steering wheel respond to swiping motions. The driver can also use the touchpad without looking away from the road. The input options are rounded off by shortcut keys in front of the controller for frequently accessed operating tasks, and by the optional control array for the driving assistance systems above the rotary light switch. The seats in the G-Class are equipped as standard with numerous convenience functions such as the Memory function for the driver's seat, seat heating front and rear, and luxury head restraints in the front. The side sections of the seat cushions and backrests of the active multi-contour seats include integrated air chambers. The standard audio system features seven loudspeakers. The Burmester surround sound system with 16 speakers and a 590 watt amplifier with Digital Sound Processing is available as optional equipment.
Under the new body too, a completely new ladder-on-frame chassis underpins the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class. The SUV now comes with a modern independent front suspension, whole steel and aluminium has been used in its construction to keep the overall weight low.

(The famous G63 AMG variant will get the same 4.0-litre V8 albeit with power uprated to 603 bhp and 700 Nm)
Under the hood, the new G-Class will be available in a number of engines. The base G650 version will get the 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 AMG engine with 415 bhp and 610 Nm of peak torque. The famous G63 AMG variant will get the same 4.0-litre V8 albeit with power uprated to 603 bhp and 700 Nm. This will also be the version that India will get as a Completely Built Unit (CBU). A 9-speed automatic transmission will be standard across the range. In addition, the SUV will come with a live rear axle, permanent All-Wheel Drive system and three differential locks. Mercedes-AMG is said to be dropping the G65 V12 version on the G-Wagen with this generation and the variant is expected to make way for a new hybrid.
