2020 Volkswagen Golf Breaks Cover With 5 Hybrid Powertrain Options

The eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf has officially been unveiled and with the new-gen model, VW has started a hybrid offensive. The new VW Golf comes in five hybrid drive versions, out of which three will be mild-hybrid versions, while the other two will be plug-in hybrid models. The new-gen Golf is also more technology-loaded, featuring a near-button-less, digitally-inclined cabin along with a new feature called Car2X that warns against hazards on an anticipatory basis. The new Volkswagen Golf will be manufactured at its birthplace in Wolfsburg and is slated for a market launch in December 2019.

Talking about the new VW Golf, Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG said, "Over the course of seven generations, the Golf has impressed more than 35 million customers. The entire automobile industry expects a new Golf to set the standard." On the other hand, Ralf Brandstatter, Chief Operating Officer of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, said, "This car is completely new. But of course, a Golf always remains a Golf. Because the underlying concept is timeless. This car has defined our brand over decades. The Golf has consistently made new technologies available for everyone."

New-gen Volkswagen Golf comes with sharper exterior styling with centre-positioned Golf lettering
Compared to the previous-gen model, the new Golf has slightly grown in length by 26 mm to 4,284 mm, while its width has decreased by 10 mm to 1,789 mm. The wheelbase, however, remains nearly identical with a reduction of a mere 1 mm at 2,636 mm. Visually, the car is a lot more sleeker now with sharper-looking double-barrel LED projector lights and LED daytime running lamps, flanked by a slim single slat grille. The chiselled front bumper comes with muscular lines and a wide central airdam, and body-coloured accents on either end. The clamshell bonnet also comes with some sharp creases that also run along with the profile of the car, in-line with the sharp design language. The rear section features black-accented LED taillamps, a similar muscular bumper and chrome insert and the Golf lettering on the tailgate right below the VW logo.

New-gen Volkswagen Golf gets a near-button-less dashboard with 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8.25-inch infotainment system
The cabin comes with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8.25-inch infotainment system display, along with an optional 10-inch infotainment screen as well. People with compatible Samsung smartphones can set them up as the vehicle's key, with functions like a wave the phone near the door to unlock or start the engine by simply putting the phone on the centre console. There is also an optional windshield head-up display on offer.

As already mentioned, the new VW Golf gets five hybrid powertrain options, and three of them features a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, mated to a TSI petrol engine. The motor comes in three power outputs - 109 bhp, 129 bhp, and 148 bhp. As for the plug-in hybrid models, they come with a 13 kWh battery and are tuned to offer 201 bhp and 241 bhp of power respectively. There is also a 1.0-litre turbo three-cylinder petrol engine on offer that comes in two states of tune 89 bhp and 109 bhp, along with a 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder also offered in two states of tune - 114 bhp and 148 bhp. The Golf also gets a diesel option with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine tuned to make either 114 bhp or 148 bhp.
