2022 World Car Awards: Hyundai IONIQ 5 wins World Car Design of the Year

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 took home top honours in the World Car Design of the Year edging out its sister model the Kia EV6. Hyundai's retro-styled crossover faced stiff competition from its Kia sibling and the sharp Audi e-tron GT in the run-up to the final award. The Ioniq 5 is Hyundai's first dedicated battery electric vehicle under its new Ioniq family sitting on the company's new e-GMP platform.

Revealed in early 2021, the Ioniq 5 follows a retro design theme inspired by the Hyundai Pony – a car conceived by noted automobile designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. The retro design elements start from the shape of the body which looks to be a modern interpretation of the boxy Pony with the headlamp and tail-lamp LED design too providing a throwback to the squared design elements of the original.

Hidden behind the boxy retro-modern design is a car with a 3000mm wheelbase and while it may not look it, its larger than the Creta and even the Tucson. The cabin is spacious and follows a minimalist design with two 12.3-inch screens providing drivers with all the required information and infotainment needs. performance too is something to write home about
