World Environment Day 2022: 5 Most Fuel-Efficient Petrol Cars On Sale In India

Having a car that offers good fuel economy is one of the simpler ways of saving up some expenses on fuel. The more efficient a car is the lesser fuel it burns over the course of daily driving. We take a look at some of the most efficient petrol cars you can currently buy.
Maruti Suzuki Celerio – 26.68 kmpl

Maruti has long offered some very fuel-efficient cars in the market and the Celerio continues this trend. At 26.68 kmpl, the hatchback is the most efficient petrol car you can currently buy. Part of this come down to the Celerio's new 1.0-litre engine which now features dual injectors and cooled exhaust gas recirculation for a more controlled combustion process. The Celerio is also light with a kerb weight of between 800 and 825 kg depending on the variant. It's the AMT version which is the most fuel-efficient with the manual returning a lower 26 kmpl.
Honda City e:HEV – 26.5kmpl

Honda's spring boarded itself right into the five most fuel-efficient cars with the new City e:HEV hybrid. The compact sedan achieves its astounding 26.5kmpl claim thanks to Honda's new e:HEV hybrid technology which pairs the petrol engine with two electric motors to power the front wheels. Unlike mild-hybrid systems Honda's e:HEV is a strong hybrid meaning that it gives the City the ability to run completely on electricity at low city speeds with the engine only cutting in in case the battery runs out of charge – it charges the battery and doesn't send power to the wheels. It's only as speeds increase that you will find the engine directly powering the wheels.
Maruti Suzuki Wagon R – 25.19 kmpl

Maruti's tall boy hatchback received a new heart as part of an update earlier this year. Aside from a few cosmetic updates, the Wagon R received Maruti's new 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre DualJet engines with engine start-stop tech bumping up fuel economy. It's the 1.0-litre AMT model that is the more fuel-efficient of the two delivering a claimed 25.19 kmpl to the 1.2 AMT's 24.43 kmpl. The 1.0 litre manual meanwhile is good for 24.35 kmpl.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire – 24.12 kmpl

The Dzire could once have been called the most fuel-efficient petrol sedan on sale in India though it's the new City that has now taken that cake. The Dzire has been one of Maruti's best selling cars in the country alongside its hatchback sibling the Swift. The 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine is one of the peppiest naturally aspirated units in the segment developing 89 bhp and 113 Nm. As with other Maruti's on the list it's the AMT model that is the most fuel-efficient with the manual delivering a slightly lower 23.26 kmpl.
Maruti Suzuki Swift – 23.76 kmpl

The Swift rounds out the list of most fuel-efficient petrol cars currently in the market with the AMT model delivering a claimed 23.76 kmpl and the manual 23.20 kmpl. Maruti's hot-selling hatchback, currently in its third generation, received a mid-lifecycle update early last year that saw the introduction of some new equipment and more importantly the 89 bhp DualJet petrol engine. The new powerplant brought with it an upgrade in power output along with improved mileage with the older 1.2 mill claimed to deliver 21.21 kmpl.
