Mercedes Reveals Details About New AMG V8 Biturbo Engine

Mercedes isn't the one to take its success for granted, and its constant endeavours to stay on top of its game are pretty evident. The latest one being the new AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine. What's also exciting is that this recently unveiled engine will make its debut as the heart of the new Mercedes AMG GT. We bring you some details about the new eight-cylinder unit. Most importantly, it is good for a peak power of up to 510bhp and a maximum torque of up to 650Nm. The new AMG V8 follows in the footsteps of the V8 tradition that first started in 1967 with the M100 in the 300 SEL 6.8 AMG.

Christian Enderle, Head of Engine and Powertrain Development, Mercedes AMG, said, "The new AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo sees us presenting an exciting and powerful sports car engine which, thanks to a number of measures, also represents the next step in efficiency."
Interestingly, the new AMG V8 motor is the first sports car engine with 'hot inside V' and dry sump lubrication. What it means is that its two turbochargers are mounted inside the V configuration instead on the outside of the cylinder banks. Referred to as 'hot inside V', this allows for a compact engine design, an optimum response and low exhaust gas emissions. On the other hand, dry sump lubrication allows the engine to be installed lower, which moves the centre of gravity closer to the road and forms the basis for high lateral acceleration. Long story short, this is how the M178 is the world's first sports car engine with hot inside V and dry sump lubrication. Also, with a dry weight of 209 kg, it is also the lightest engine in its segment.

Here are the new engine's specs:
a. Cylinder arrangement: V8
b. Cylinder angle: 90-degree
c. Valves per cylinder: 4
d. Displacement: 3982cc
e. Bore x stroke: 83.0 x 92.0 mm
f. Maximum power: 510bhp at 6,250rpm
g. Maximum torque: 650Nm at 1,750 - 4,750 rpm
h. Emissions standard: Euro 6
