There is one thing that is non-negotiable- You should always abide by all rules and regulations that have been set for importing foreign cars into India. Here are some things worth noting:
- The cars that you are considering for import must always be manufactured and assembled somewhere outside India.
- You are allowed to import cars to India, only from the country where it was originally built.
- It is allowed to import only new cars into India; in that case, new means brand new in every way possible. The car must never have been previously sold, loaned, registered, or given on lease.
- As per the traffic rules, only right-hand drive vehicles can be imported to India.
- Again, as per the Indian metric system, the speed motor must display kmph (kilometres per hour) and not mph (miles per hour).

A few facts to know about banned vehicles
Apart from regulations for importing cars into India, there is also a ban on a few cars. Here is a list:
- You need to know that cars ranging from 1000 cc to 2500 cc are strictly prohibited in terms of Indian imports.
- The same rule applies for heavy-duty bikes that range from 50 cc to 500 cc.
- Even scooters with engine capacity ranging from 250 cc to 800 cc cannot be imported to India.
Alteration of residence
Non-resident Indians can import one car with them, when they are finally shifting to India permanently. However, there are no such hard and fast rules on the kind of vehicle, i.e. it can be new, used, or even old. It can be even a two-wheeler, four-wheeler, or a scooter.
