Highlights

  • Automatic transmission is offered with the W6, W8 and W10 variants
  • Despite being of lesser capacity, the engine produces the same 140bhp
  • None of the 1.99-litre variants of the XUV500 come with AWD setup
Earlier this year, Mahindra and Mahindra launched a 1.99-litre version of its flagship SUV - the XUV500 in India. The smaller capacity engine was Mahindra's loop hole to overcome the Supreme Court's ban on diesel vehicle with engine capacity above 2000cc in Delhi and NCR. While initially the car was only launched with a manual transmission, taking customer requirements into account the home-grown auto major has silently launched the SUV with automatic transmission now. Like in the regular XUV500, the automatic variant in the 1.99-litre version will be offered with the W6, W8 and the W10 variants. Prices for the automatic variants start from Rs. 14.51 lakh going up to 17.31 Lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The Supreme Court's ban on registration of diesel vehicle with engine capacity above 2000cc in Delhi and NCR was a major setback for auto manufacturers like Mahindra and Mahindra, who majorly sell diesel cars. While the other manufactures were working on appeals to revoke this decision, Mahindra became proactive and came out with a lower capacity diesel engine for the region.

What's commendable here is the fact that despite being of lesser cubic capacity, the new 1.99-litre mHawk engine produces the same power output as the 2.2-litre mHawk motor. The new oil burner continues to churns out the same 140bhp, while developing slightly lesser torque of 320Nm. The new automatic transmission is an Aisin-sourced 6-speed torque convertor that is truly an efficient unit, something that we experienced in our review as well.

In addition customer can also choose the tried and tested 6-speed manual gearbox that is already available with the engine. That said, unlike in the regular model, the 1.99-litre version's W10 AT variant is offered only with front-wheel drive (FWD) setup as of now. Currently none of the 1.99-litre variants comes in all-wheel drive (AWD) format. Detailed specification and priced of the variants have been updated on Mahindra XUV500's official website.
