Nissan's Autonomous Car Project Details Revealed

Nissan was amongst the first ones to announce plans to launch multiple, commercially-viable Autonomous Drive vehicles by 2020. This announcement obviously caused quite a bit of stir and people have been looking forward to getting behind the wheel and yet do nothing to drive it.

However, Nissan has now said that they won't be fully autonomous. In fact, they will introduce autonomous technology in a phased manner. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said the company will launch their first autonomous driving functions by the end of 2016. The first system will be a traffic-jam pilot that will enable the car to drive itself on congested highways.

It will be followed by the fully-automated parking system that will enable the car to park itself. Two years after that, in 2018, there will be a semi-automations driving system that will allow their cars to automatically negotiate hazards and change lanes.

Nissan maintains that in all these scenarios, the driver will remain in control of the car, so technically, the cars would not be completely autonomous.
