The sub-compact sedan segment in India has observed impressive momentum for a few years now. While Tata initiated India to the segment with the Indigo eCS, it wasn't till Maruti Suzuki brought in the Swift DZire that the market realised this particular category's potential. And it wouldn't be far-fetched to say that wherever there is Maruti Suzuki, there is competition. Soon after DZire's arrival, Honda threw its hat in the ring with the Amaze, which was followed by the Hyundai Xcent, Tata Zest, Ford Figo Aspire, and the latest entrant - Volkswagen Ameo.

As the aforementioned names make a strong enough case for sub-4 metre sedans in India, we hear another manufacturer is preparing to foray into the segment. Media reports suggest that Renault is working on a sub-compact sedan based on the CMF-A platform. Carlos Ghosn had previously mentioned that the platform, which also underpins the Renault Kwid, will form the basis of a wide array of cars from both, Renault and Nissan.

However, we must mention that sources in France suggest Renault is ruling out a sub-compact sedan and considering a sub-compact SUV instead since the carmaker sees it offers better potential for sales volume. Yet, the sedan idea has not been completely dismissed.

Though not much is known about Renault's sub-compact sedan, it'd be safe to say that the car is likely to be the cheapest amongst its peers, especially if one takes Renault Kwid's price into consideration.
