Sona Comstar And IRP Nexus To Collaborate For New Electric Motor Tech

- Sona Comstar & IRP Nexus Group are working on new EV technology
- The aim is to manufacture and market magnet-less EV powertrain globally
- Sona Comstar aims to begin manufacturing the new powertrain by 2023
Sona Comstar, one of India's leading automotive components manufacturer and Israel's IRP Nexus Group have come together to develop a magnet-less electric motor technology, which could be used on all sorts of EVs, including two-wheelers and three-wheelers. The new electric powertrain (Yes, it will be proper electric powertrain including a motor and controller), will be manufactured and marketed globally. The project entails Sona Comstar and IRP collaborate on conceiving, designing, prototyping and manufacturing the said electric powertrain. The design will be highly efficient, will be low-cost and versatile too.

"Our technology ensures not only cleaner air but also a more environment-friendly production process and responsible use of natural resources. We are excited to partner with a global, leading player such as Sona Comstar to bring the product to the mass market."

"We are excited with this partnership as it will help India reduce its dependence on imports of critical raw materials. The system developed through this partnership will be environmentally compatible and cost-effective, ensuring the security of natural resources by avoiding the use of rare earth elements," said Kiran Deshmukh, CTO, Sona Comstar.
Under the agreement, IRP will license its technology to Sona Comstar for manufacturing of the system exclusively in India, expecting to start mass production in 2023. The idea is to develop an electric powertrain which does not us rare-earth elements like Neodymium. The company is an official supplier to a bunch of EV manufacturers such as Mahindra Electric, Revolt Intellicorp, Ampere Vehicles and so on.
