Highlights

  • Tesla has officially delayed deliveries to 2022 for the Cybertruck
  • The Cybertruck was first unveiled in 2019 before the pandemic
  • Apart from the Cybertruck, the Roadster and Semi-truck are also delayed

After hinting at a possible delay in the launch of the much anticipated Tesla Cybertruck, the Elon Musk-led company has officially confirmed on its official website configurator that the car will be delivered only in 2022. Tesla updated the configuration page with text stating " Fully refundable. You will be able to complete your configuration as production nears in 2022.

This comes after for months many manufacturers have struggled because of the global semiconductor shortage. In fact during its Q2 earnings calls Tesla hinted at this possibility. "We are also making progress on the industrialisation of Cybertruck, which is currently planned for Austin production subsequent to the Model Y," said the company in its earnings call.

Elon Musk revealed the Cybertruck in 2019

Elon Musk had been tweeting about the Cybertruck for months and had promised a 2021 delivery of the car which was originally unveiled before the pandemic ravaged the world. More recently, Musk had tempered expectations and said that mass delivery would only happen in 2022 but had hoped that some early adopters would get their cars delivered in December.

Apart from the global semiconductor crisis, Tesla has other unique challenges with the Cybertruck. For example, its unique steel exoskeleton body requires a completely new manufacturing process. Tesla so far has only completed engineering design of the vehicle. The note that Tesla has published on the configuration page stands for all three variants of the Cybertruck.

Tesla is not the only company to have production delays as Rivian also announced delays in the deliveries of the R1T. Ford has plans to start deliveries of the F-150 Lightning while GM is planning to launch the Hummer EV at the end of this year. Tesla has been forced to delay the Cybertruck, the Roadster and the Semi Truck.
