BMW India Increases Localisation Level in Its Cars to 50 Per Cent

The day started with Mr Philipp von Sahr, President, BMW Group India, addressing the audience at the BMW Plant Chennai. Mr von Sahr spoke about the company's plans for the Indian market and how serious it is about its future here. Next up was Mr Robert Frittrang, Managing Director, BMW Plant Chennai, who spoke about the Chennai factory and the dedication with which each Bimmer is made. He then invited Sachin to the factory floor to assemble the BMW 520d. Sachin, together with 3 BMW Plant Chennai employees, proceeded to work on the car's engine bay.

Mr Tendulkar said, "I am an avid BMW enthusiast and have been driving BMW cars since a very long time. But the experience of making a BMW with my own hands was unique and unforgettable. I am impressed by the high quality standards followed at BMW Plant Chennai that ensure the impeccable performance of a BMW. I got the opportunity to go through the tiniest details and efforts that are put into making a BMW. Next time I take my BMW out, I can proudly say - I have made one!"
Delving into details about BMW's plant in Chennai - it started operations on March 29, 2007. Up to 8 BMW models can be locally produced on the 2 assembly lines at the Chennai facility. For now, the BMW 1 Series, 3 Series Gran Turismo, 5 Series, 7 Series, X1, X3 and the X5 are produced there. The plant currently employs 550 people and uses advanced machinery and technology to achieve excellency.
As far as the company's plans for India go - the BMW Group has increased its investment in BMW India to Rs. 4.9 billion from Rs. 3.9 billion. Mr von Sahr said the company will continue to invest over the years. Moving on to the key aspect of BMW's growth sustenance, i.e. a product onslaught - BMW will expand its range and explore all possibilities for luxury cars in India. This goal will be aided by the M, X, and i brands, that will also steer the company here. Other than that, BMW will bring in 15 new products including the X6, X5M, and the new BMW 1 Series.
