- The Tata Altroz is still the most affordable offering in this segment
The new 2022 Maruti Suzuki Baleno has officially gone on sale in India, and it's priced from Rs. 6.35 lakh, going up to Rs. 9.49 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The starting price of the premium hatchback is quite attractive and is bound to attract a lot of new customers. In fact, the company has said that it has already garnered over 25,000 pre-orders for the new Baleno, in just 16 days, which is certainly a good number. In India, the Baleno mainly competes with the likes of the Hyundai i20, Tata Altroz and Honda Jazz. So, does the 2022 Maruti Suzuki Baleno have a pricing advantage over its rival? Let's find out.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno vs Hyundai i20

Compared to the Baleno, the Hyundai i20's starting price is Rs. 63,000 higher, while the top-end trim is dearer by Rs. 61,000, against the Baleno's range-topper
Hyundai offers a 1.2-lite naturally aspirated petrol engine with the i20, which is offered with both a 5-speed manual and an Intelligent Variable Transmission or iVT. The model is offered in all three variants - Magna, Sportz, and Asta, and the pricing start from Rs. 6.98 lakh, going up to Rs. 10.10 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Compared to the Baleno, the i20's starting price is Rs. 63,000 higher, while the top-end trim is dearer by Rs. 61,000, against the Baleno's range-topper. But do remember the i20 gets a proper automatic transmission, whereas the Baleno gets an AMT or automated manual transmission.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno vs Tata Altroz

The base variant of the Tata Altroz is cheaper than the Baleno by Rs. 35,000, whereas the top-end trim is nearly Rs. 70,000 less expensive
The Tata Altroz is also offered with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, however, it only comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard. In fact, the company doesn't offer an automatic variant with any engine option. As for prices, they start at around Rs. 6 lakh and go up to Rs. 8.8 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). This means the base variant of the Altroz is cheaper than the Baleno by Rs. 35,000, whereas the top-end trim is nearly Rs. 70,000 less expensive. Although, do remember, the Altroz is only offered with a manual transmission.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno vs Honda Jazz

Compared to the Baleno, the entry-level Honda Jazz is over Rs. 1.36 lakh more expensive, while the top-end trim is dearer by Rs. 46,000 against the top-spec Baleno
As for the Honda Jazz, like the Baleno, this too is only offered with a naturally aspirated petrol engine, mated to a 5-speed manual and an optional CVT or continuous variable transmission. The Jazz is priced from Rs. 7.71 lakh to Rs. 9.95 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). This means, compared to the Baleno, the entry-level Jazz is over Rs. 1.36 lakh more expensive, while the top-end trim is dearer by Rs. 46,000 against the top-spec Baleno. However, do remember, the Jazz gets a proper CVT automatic, whereas the Baleno gets an AMT unit.
So, on paper, the 2022 Maruti Suzuki does have an advantage over the i20 and Jazz in terms of pricing. Whereas despite being cheaper than the new Baleno, the Altroz only comes in a manual option, which could be a deal-breaker for a good number of customers in this segment. Especially, when you consider the number of smart and segment-first features that the Baleno now gets, like - Head-Up Display, 360-view camera, 9-inch HD touchscreen unit Smartplay Pro+, and over 40 connected car features. These further strengthen the Baleno's game, against rivals like the Hyundai i20 and Tata Altroz, which until recently, were much more premium and advanced offerings compared to Maruti's premium hatchback. We will compare these cars in real-world conditions to tell you which is the better premium hatchback soon, so, keep watching this space.
