Highlights

TVS has unveiled Akula 310 - the BMW G 310 R-based concept bike at the 2016 Auto Expo. The two-wheeler manufacturer that has been in the news for the last few months for its participation in the Dakar rally to launching the new Apache RTR 200, the reasons were many.

When the Draken X21 concept was showcased at the previous Auto Expo, it had a 249.2cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine developing 38.5bhp of power and 23Nm of torque. This engine used a six-speed gearbox to transfer the power to the rear wheel. When BMW released the specifications of the G 310 R, the bike had a 313cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine developing 34bhp at 9,500rpm and 28Nm at 7,500rpm. These real-time figures are not very different from the figures the Draken concept promised. This engine has been developed by BMW and is aimed at increasing the sales just the way KTM did after deciding to work with Bajaj to develop a series of smaller capacity engines. Well, the Duke series has been doing wonders for KTM globally and the same can be expected from this merger as well. To keep the costs low, this bike will be developed at TVS's plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu and is expected to be exported to the outside world.

This TVS Akula 310 concept will soon enter production and will be priced quite competitively. This also means that the TVS Akula 310 concept will have the potential to compete with both the KTM 200 Duke and 390 Duke in its production avatar.
