When the police pull you over

When traffic police stop you, the first step is to provide the necessary documents and park your car safely on the side of the road. Follow the steps below for a smooth experience:

    1. Inquire as to why the cops pulled you over. Remain cool and calm and do not argue with the traffic police. Explain the reason for your action and seek pardon if you broke any traffic rules. Doing so might let the traffic police let you off the hook.
    1. Never talk about your camaraderie or relationships with people in higher positions.
    1. Never try to bribe the traffic police officer.
    1. If the police confiscate your license, pay the fine in the police station or even on the spot. The traffic police will provide a court notice if you do not pay the fine. If you fail to appear in court, an arrest warrant can be issued against you.

Your Rights

You should be aware of your rights as a commuter so that the next time traffic police pull you over, you know what you can and cannot do.

    1. Your driving licence cannot be seized unless you have broken some sort of rule. Red light jumping, driving under the influence, vehicle overloading, and using your mobile while driving are a few common offences prevalent in India.
    1. You need to present your driving license, pollution certificate, and insurance papers for your car upon breaking traffic rules.
    1. The traffic police officer must be in a uniform and have their buckle number and name displayed clearly. Remember to present your documents to an officer in a uniform only.
    1. The traffic police cannot tow your vehicle unless it is vacant.
    1. If a female gets stopped by traffic police after 6 pm, she can ask for a female officer to physically search her.
    1. The traffic officer cannot take your car keys or force you to exit your vehicle.
    1. A traffic police officer cannot impose fines without a challan book or an e-challan machine.
    1. If you violate traffic rules, you might be arrested if you have broken any law. In such a case, you will be brought to court within 24 hours of arrest.
    1. Absolute authority lies with traffic police officers on the roads. Ensure that you follow all the rules and their instructions.
