Hyundai Mobis, an affiliate of the Hyundai Motor Group, has developed the world's first airbag system for sunroofs in cars. In this day and age, all manufacturers have passenger safety as their utmost priority and one could have said that it was just a matter of time before something like this came to light. The company was working on the sunroof airbag for two and a half years. It will have utility mainly for cars and SUVs with panoramic sunroof. The idea is to protect the occupants in case there is a roll-over after a crash. The sunroof airbag can deploy in 0.08 seconds and provide protection to the occupants from serious neck and head injuries in case of a roll-over. Hyundai Mobis is confident that it will be able to procure large orders for sunroof airbags, especially from makers of Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs).

The global airbag market is worth $ 5.3 billion, says the company and with its proprietary sunroof airbag system, Hyundai Mobis is confident that it can get a major share of the same. The airbag market is said to grow by 11 per cent every year till 2022. One of the major reasons is the ever-growing global demand for SUVs. Hyundai Mobis is Korea's largest auto parts maker by sales.

The sunroof airbags will be mounted on the sunroof rails and will be deployed from rear to the front of the roof of the vehicle. The airbags will be triggered by the vehicle's yaw sensor. The airbags will be designed to cover almost the entire roof of the vehicle.
