Power Steering Not Working? Why This Happens and What is the Solution!

Power steering ensures that it is easy for you to swerve through obstacles and manoeuvre your vehicle. You have to depend on the proper functioning of your power steering for your safety but also for a smooth ride.
But, the power steering is not resistant to damage and wear. Several things can go wrong with the power steering, causing it to fail. This article explains why your power steering might be malfunctioning and what you can do about it.

What Causes The Power Steering To Stop Working?
Here are some of the most common culprits behind failed power steering:
- Loss of Steering Fluid: A sudden drop in the power steering fluid levels point towards a faulty steering performance. Inspect the seals and hose for leaks to solve the issue.
- Broken Hydraulic Pump: You might notice some odd sounds from the power steering. This noise is a result of deteriorating performance.
- Snapped Serpentine Belt: The hydraulic pump spins due to the belt driven by the crankshaft pulley. When slipping or snapped, the belt leaves the pump powerless and disrupts fluid supply into the system.
- Worn Out Electronic Components: Electric power steering systems have an electric motor, steering torque sensor, and dedicated modules. Wiring connects these different components. Any fault in the elements or wiring can lead to partial or complete loss of steering assistance.

What To Do When The Power Steering Stops Working
- Signal Nearby Drivers: You can use your hazard lights to indicate to other drivers that something is wrong with your vehicle. You'll need to practice caution and allow the other car to pass by turning on these lights.
- Carefully Maneuver Vehicle: Carefully try to turn your power steering to switch lanes towards the shoulder. You might require additional effort to operate the steering.
- Keep the Speed Slow: As you are trying to pull over to the side of the road, hit the brake pedals lightly. Once you come to the shoulder lane, gradually apply the brakes to stop the vehicle.
- Call for a Tow Truck: You can call for a tow truck if you feel that your vehicle is difficult to manoeuvre. Before reaching out for a truck, make sure that the car is in a safe spot.
- Inspect the Situation: After parking your vehicle, take a look at the severity of the situation. Turn the steering sideways and analyze its response and performance. If things don't look so good, take your vehicle to a professional for repair.
