- Maruti Suzuki introduced the 2nd gen Swift in 2011
- The new Maruti Suzuki Swift will be launched in India in early 2018
According to a recently surfaced image, the production of the current-generation Maruti Suzuki Swift hatchback has come to its end. The photo which appears to have been taken during the rollout of the last Maruti Suzuki Swift shows the assembly workers taking a picture along with the car. There is also a printed note on the hood of the car which says - "Last Swift:-E07460 Glorious Journey Ends here... For new beginning... Great Car by Great Team Date:-23-Dec-2017 Bye Bye:-Swift". This indicates that the current-gen Swift is now making way for the arrival of the new third-generation Maruti Suzuki Swift, which is slated to be launched in India in early 2018. In fact, the car was recently spotted in India ahead of launch.

The current-gen Maruti Suzuki Swift has been India since 2011
When we reached out to Maruti Suzuki India to confirm this report, the company said "no comments on this subject". On the other hand, the company has currently shut down its plants for the scheduled biannual maintenance, which means production of all vehicles is right now on halt, until January 5, 2018. This means we might get clarity on the situation when Maruti Suzuki resumes production.

The Maruti Suzuki Swift was first launched in India back in 2005 and while globally it was the in its third generation, in India it was the first-gen Swift hatchback, powered by a 1.3-litre petrol engine. With the launch of its facelift, in 2007, Maruti introduced the new Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre diesel engine and in 2010 replaced the petrol motor with the new 1.2-litre K-Series engine adhering to the new BS-IV norm. A year later, in 2011, Maruti introduced the second-generation Swift hatchback, which came with an improved design along with better styling and feature. The car also received its mid-life facelift a couple of years later in 2014, which is currently on sale in the Indian market.

As for the upcoming third-gen Maruti Suzuki Swift, it is based on the all-new HEARTECT platform, like the new-gen Dzire, and is lighter and more rigid than the current version. The new generation Swift gets a completely new styling and looks more upmarket than its predecessor. The car is loaded with features like projector headlamps with LED DRLs, sporty alloys, flat-bottom steering wheel, new cabin and much more. Under the hood, it will get the updated 1.2-litre K-Series petrol and 1.3-litre diesel engine with improved output and better fuel efficiency. We also expect the 1.0-litre turbocharged BoosterJet petrol engine from the Baleno RS to be introduced. Transmission options will include the 5-speed manual and automatic units - though Maruti may consider the AMTs for both petrol and diesel models in India.
