Key Highlights
- Renault sold 9,459 units of Kwid in June 2016
- Renault's market share went up from 2.3% to 3.8%
- The Kwid commands a waiting period of 4-5 months
The Renault Kwid has overtaken the Maruti Suzuki Swift in sales terms in June 2016. The Swift and the Kwid do not feature in the same category – and by no means are we comparing them – but they have both featured in the list of top 10 highest selling cars in India for some months now. And as usual out of these 10 models, 7 belong to Maruti Suzuki – including the Swift which traditionally comes in at number 6.

In June 2016 however Maruti Suzuki had a production setback due to a fire at its vendor Subros’ manufacturing facility. Maruti Suzuki lost 2 full days of production before production could resume. As a result, Swift numbers fell allowing the Kwid to get ahead. 9,459 units of the Kwid were sold in June 2016 as compared to 9,033 units of the Swift. That put the Kwid at 5th place while the Swift slipped to 6th. If we were to look at it in month-on-month growth terms, the Kwid grew by a massive 41 per cent in June 2016 as compared to May 2016 when it had sold 5,600 units and was not even in the top 10 highest selling cars for that month. The sales of the Kwid have increased Renault’s market share from 2.3 per cent to 3.8 per cent. The Swift sold 12,355 units in May 2016 as compared to 9,033 units sold in June 2016. Let us not forget that a number of buyers have also been looking at the Swift’s stablemate – the Baleno – which has also been a reason for the dent in Swift sales for the past few months. The Baleno ranks 8th in the top 10 highest selling cars for June 2016 with 6,967 units sold.
At present, the waiting period for the Kwid is said to be in excess of 4 months. Renault has received over 1.5 lakh bookings for the Kwid in less than a year since it was launched. The company has also amped up the number of units produced at its Chennai facility in order to meet the rising demand – now producing 1,600 units a month on average.
