Two-Wheeler Sales May 2022: Honda 2Wheelers India Sells 3.53 Lakh Units As Sales Recover

- Honda 2Wheelers India sold a total of 353,188 units in May 2022
- Honda's exports grew substantially in May 2022 at 32,344 units
- Sales are yet to recover to pre-pandemic levels for the two-wheeler giant
Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) reported its wholesales for May 2022 and the company sold a total of 353,188 units (domestic + exports) last month. The number was substantially higher when compared to May 2021 when the company sold 58,168 two-wheelers. However, do note that a direct year-on-year comparison would be unfair considering the nationwide lockdown during this period last year owing to the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. With respect to month-on-month sales, Honda 2Wheelers India registered a marginal decline of two per cent when compared to 361,027 units sold in April 2022.

HMSI's domestic sales stood at 320,844 units last month as against 38,763 two-wheelers in May 2021. Meanwhile, exports stood at 32,344 units, as opposed to 19,405 units, registering a hike of nearly 67 per cent year-on-year. The two-wheeler giant though is yet to achieve sales numbers on par with the pre-pandemic levels with the manufacturer selling a total of 459,897 units in May 2019.

Honda month-on-month sales saw a marginal decline of 2 per cent
Commenting on the sales performance, Atsushi Ogata, MD, President & CEO, HMSI said, "The market is gaining back strength as disturbances in terms of supply-side are subsiding coupled with rising in physical presence at office and educational institutions. The sales figures this month remain incomparable from May 2021 as frequent lockdowns in wake of the second wave marred the performance during this period last year. Growth in domestic as well as international trade continues to complement each other as we approach an early monsoon."

HMSI is on the road to recovery and the two-wheeler maker has been aggressively expanding its presence across the country. This included inaugurating premium BigWing dealerships in Muvattupuzha and Attingal in Kerala and in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The manufacturer also recently shared its roadmap for the future in India, which includes bringing a new entry-level motorcycle, flex-fuel engines and establishing battery swapping infrastructure under a new vertical. More recently, YS Guleria, Director, Sales, Marketing and Service at HMSI resigned from the company.
