  • It will be created near its iconic Wolfsburg facility
  • The original facility will be used for petrol and diesel cars

Volkswagen has announced that it will be building a new plant that is worth $2.2 billion in Wolfsburg, Germany. The new manufacturing facility will be dedicated to EVs and will be situated near its iconic headquarters. It will have the capacity to build more than 250,000 cars per year. The German automotive giant took this decision after evaluating plans to retool existing facilities but found that a plan to build a new facility would be more viable.

At the plant, the new Volkswagen flagship sedan will be built which has been christened the Trinity. It will be similar to the Passat but will be based on an electric powertrain. The car will have autonomous level 4 capability apart and a range of up to 700 km. It has an expected cost of $38,300.

Volkswagen has grand plans for the production of the vehicle with a 10-hour production process penned in. It will be the first EV based on a new platform that the group has developed called the SSP - super-platform - which has a chassis that will even be used by Porsche, Audi, Skoda, and SEAT.

Wolfsburg is the home of Volkswagen with its original plant being opened in 1938 just before world war 2. That plant produces around 750,000 vehicles a year which is three times more than this new EV facility but with this strategy, the group can gently transition into an EV first future while continuing the manufacturing of its traditional petrol and diesel cars based on the internal combustion engine.
