We told you about the all-new Volkswagen Passat when the sketch of the car was first revealed and now the company has said that it will reveal the car online in July followed by its debut in both the saloon and estate avtaar at the Paris Motor Show in October.

The people at Volkswagen have revealed the technical details of the new Passat. The company says that this 8th generation of the Passat will be upto 20% more fuel efficient than its predecessor. Infact, it has also been subject to a diet and has become 85kgs lighter all thanks to the use of high-strength, hot-formed steel and aluminum for several areas of the vehicle.

But the important bit is what goes under the hood. At the heart of the new Passat beats a 2.0-litre, 4 cylinder bi-turbo diesel which is capable of an output of 240bhp and 500Nm. The engine is mated to a 7-speed DSG sending power to the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. There is also a plug-in hybrid version in the making which will have a total range of approximately 966 km and an electric range estimated at 50 km.

The new Passat is smaller than the outgoing model but the people at Volkswagen promise a spacious cabin with additional leg- and head-room, as well as a larger trunk. It will get LED tail lamps and halogen headlights as standard equipment, but for more money clients will be able to opt for LED headlights, including one version that can automatically adjust the beam to grant optimal illumination without bothering incoming traffic.

Among other things, the Passat gets goodies like a TT-derived 12.3-inch fully configurable display, updated Park Assist, head-up display, revised 360-degree Area View function, as well as a Trailer Assist system providing aid when reversing the vehicle with a trailer attached. Safety systems like Traffic Jam Assist, Side Assist with Rear Traffic Alert, Emergency Assist, City Emergency Braking and Front Assist.

There's no word about when it'll come to India but we expect it to come here next year.
