Bajaj Working On Sub-350 cc KTM & Triumph Motorcycles

Bajaj Auto has officially confirmed that the company, together with its partners, KTM and Triumph, is working on 350 cc engines. The move comes after the government announced a revised GST structure which came into effect in September, under which GST rates for motorcycles above 350 cc have been hiked, while GST rates for sub-350 cc motorcycles have been reduced.

A new sub-350 cc engine is being developed which will eventually replace the current 398 cc of the Speed 400, at least for the domestic market.

Rakesh Sharma, Executive Director, Bajaj Auto, has confirmed this during the company’s Q2 FY26 analysts call, saying that the company is looking to realign its portfolio based on the new GST structure for motorcycles which came into effect in September 2025.

“The GST rate cuts found some of the KTM and all of the Triumph models on the wrong side of the 350cc divide. However, we’ve maintained prices, absorbing the GST increase and to some extent, the customers rewarded us with their support during the festive season. Both brands benefited a lot due from the customers’ desire to upgrade to aspirational products triggered by the GST cuts.”

“However, we’re also working along with our partners KTM and Triumph on reshaping our portfolio to take advantage of the lower GST rates, and these products will be launched in due course,” said Sharma.

The new engines, for both Triumph and Bajaj will have displacement below the cut-off of 350 cc and Bajaj Auto R&D has already started working on this. The slightly smaller sized engines than the current 399 cc displacement of the KTM and Triumph range are expected to see a small drop in peak output. What is not clear at this stage is whether the KTM 390 and the Triumph 400 models will continue to be manufactured for export markets.

Either way, slightly smaller engines with slightly lower performance figures will soon replace the KTM 390 Duke, 390 Adventure as well as the Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 range. The revised GST structure is also expected to affect the Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z as well as the Dominar 400, both of which are above the 350 cc cut-off barrier.

So far, only the confirmation has come as to the development of the sub-350 cc range for both KTM and Triumph. There’s still no timeline for how long the KTM 390 and Triumph 400 models will continue, and if Bajaj will continue to absorb the higher GST rates and continue to offer these models at the same prices.
