Electronic Stability Control: How Does It Work?

- ABS and Airbags are the most advertised and well-known features
- What is known as Electronic stability control?
- We will discuss the ESC or the Electronic stability control briefly
However, another safety system that is quickly gaining ground in India is the ESC, also known as the Electronic Stability Control System which aims to help a person stay in control of their car all the time. Slowly yet steadily ESC or Electronic stability control is becoming a mandatory feature on all cars sold in India from 2023. There are a few things to know about this system and we will talk about that below.

What is ESC or Electronic stability control and how does it work:
ESC or Electronic stability control system or programe which is also the full form for ESP in simple terms means that it is a traction control system that helps provide stability to a person's car when the person suddenly applies brake and maneuvers on the road. Hence, if ESC is not there, this maneuver would cause the car to lose control and cause a big accident. ESB-enabled cars have sensors on key points of the vehicle like the tyres and the steering that are connected to an onboard computer that continuously monitors whether the vehicle is responding according to the driver's input. If the ESC kicks in to engage the ABS which applies individual brakes while also adjusting the power output to the wheels. This ensures that the car remains under control by using the traction available and gives the driver more control and time to react.

What else should you know?
Electronic stability control or ESC is very important because accidents happen without warning and the road is an ever-changing environment where the situation can change in seconds. Therefore, in situations like these, a human doesn't have control over a lot of things, such as forces acting upon the car when driving, loss of friction of the tyres when driving on icy roads or may be wet surfaces and many such situations.
However, we can predict such situations and accordingly plan for them. ESC or Electronic stability control systems come in here and they are the result of meticulous planning and engineering. Having one on board your car may very well be the difference between life and death. ESC systems are important as they assist the driver in driving through environments that otherwise would have been difficult.
