How Much Does F1 Fuel Weigh And What Is It Made Of?

The majority of the F1 fans at one point of time or another have wondered about the fuel's weight which is used to power f1 cars. Starting with the tank's weight, an F1 car's fuel tank weighs approximately 110 kgs or 242 lbs. In 2010, ‘mid-race refuelling' got banned due to reasons of safety as well as cost-cutting. Therefore, the fuel tanks need to be filled up to the brim before the race starts. Moreover, racers need to have 1 litre fuel left over after the finish for officials to collect a post-race sample and test it for irregularities.

What Is The Weight Of F1 Fuel?
In 2019, the weight of the fuel tank was increased from 105 to 110kgs to ensure that drivers do not run out of fuel in the middle of a race. As per the rules, the cars cannot be refuelled during a match. Moreover, if at the end of a race the officials do not get enough fuel as a sample, the racer will get disqualified. On the other hand, every split second in an F1 race counts, and therefore, it is crucial to get the quantity right if one does not want to get eliminated, disqualified or banned.
How Do Formula One Participants Decide The Amount Of Fuel To Put Into Their Vehicle?
Now that you have an idea about how crucial it is to put in the right amount of fuel in an F1 vehicle, you might be wondering about how the teams know how much fuel to put in the vehicle. Well, the simple answer is – the analysts take the help of complex calculations by using data accumulated during the vehicle's practice sessions and come to an estimate regarding how much fuel they should put into the vehicle so that it is neither overweight nor gets disqualified due to inadequate levels of sample fuel.

Nowadays, F1 teams also have lavish factories fitted with simulators. These pieces of machinery are extremely advanced and allow teams to test out multiple scenarios unlimited times. This helps them get a rough idea about how the car will perform on the race track and how much fuel they will require to complete the race comfortably.
What Is F1 Fuel Composed Of?
In the latest instalment of Formula one, cars got powered by fuel containing around 5.75% of ethanol. In the upcoming 2022 season, the fuel will contain approximately 10% ethanol. For this reason, the fuel will be named as E10.

The new fuel variant aims at being more environment-friendly and safe for use. In the future, fuel may become even more safer to use as F1 plans to bring in 100% bio-fuels to power up the vehicles.
