Land Rover is reportedly going the way of Mercedes-Benz and Mahindra by planning to introduce petrol engines for its SUVs in India. There is a demand for petrol cars in the country after the recent Delhi government registration ban on vehicles with diesel engines having a capacity of 2,000cc and above. Carmakers feel that the ban may be extended to other parts of India as well.
Most of the SUVs in India's Land Rover line-up are powered by diesel engines above 2,000cc with only variants of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport available with a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 petrol motor.
Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) plans to bring in 2 petrol engine options for its Land Rover SUVs - a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged motor which produces 237bhp and a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 unit that has an output of 335bhp.
The Range Rover Evoque is likely to get the turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol mill which will be mated to a 9-speed automatic gearbox, while the Discovery, Range Rover Sport, and Range Rover could get the supercharged 3.0-litre V6 unit that is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission box.

Meanwhile, Jaguar Land Rover is gearing up to launch the all-new Jaguar XE in India on February 3, 2016, with the company's outlets accepting orders for the sedan. The XE is the most affordable car in Jaguar's line-up.
The Jaguar XE will be made available in 2 petrol variants, with both versions powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder unit which will be in different states of tune. One variant produces 197bhp of power while the other has an output of 237bhp. Both cars will be equipped with an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
Jaguar also sells a diesel version of the XE in international markets. However, that model is not going to be offered in India anytime soon.
