Mercedes-Benz India To Recall 2,179 Units Of The ML, GL and R-Class

- Recall to inspect the car's brake booster for advanced corrosion or leaks
- Mercedes cautions owners against driving affected vehicles
- Company to get in contact with owners of affected vehicles individually
Mercedes-Benz India has said that it will be recalling 2,179 units of the GL and ML Class SUVs and the R-Class MPV manufactured between October 2005 and January 2013. The recall is to inspect the vehicle's brake booster for signs of corrosion and/or leakage and change the part should it be discovered that it is leaking or shows signs of advanced corrosion. The recall is part of a global announcement from Mercedes-Benz with nearly 10 lakh vehicles affected by the recall. Mercedes India has said that it will be directly contacting vehicle owners to bring their vehicles in for inspection. Additionally, owners can also check if their vehicle is affected by the recall via the Mercedes-Benz website.

Mercedes has said 2,179 units of the ML (above), GL and R Class in India are affected by the recall
In a statement, the company said, “Based on the analysis of isolated reports, Mercedes-Benz AG has determined that on certain ML, GL (164 platform) and R-Class (251 platform) vehicles the function of the brake booster might be affected due to advanced corrosion in the joint area of its housing. After extended time in the field and in conjunction with significant water exposure, this corrosion might lead to a leakage of the brake booster. In this case, the brake force support might be reduced, leading to an increase in the brake pedal forces required to decelerate the vehicle and/or to a potentially increased stopping distance.”
The company also cautioned that in rare cases strong or hard braking could cause damage to the brake booster which could cause the brake system to fail. The company has also requested all owners of affected vehicles to avoid driving their cars prior to having them inspected.

Corrosion to the brake booster could cause the brakes to under perform or in rare cases fail.

“The recall process will involve inspecting potentially affected vehicles and depending on the results of the inspection, replacing the parts where necessary. Considering that Brakes are imperative for safe driving, we highly recommend customers of the potentially affected vehicles, to avoid the usage of the vehicle until inspection takes place and immediately contact the nearest Mercedes-Benz partner in order to align for further inspection and procedure required if any,” Mercedes India said.
