New Toyota Fortuner Launch: Highlights

The newly launched Toyota Fortuner is based on the new the 'Toyota New Generation Architecture' (TNGA) platform, which also underpins the new Innova Crysta. Toyota claims that the SUV is lighter and stiffer and promises improved ride quality, handling, and safety and we have tested that claim in our review. In terms of looks, the new Fortuner comes with a host of design and cosmetic changes and it's not actually butch looking anymore. It's sleeker and you can hardly see any muscle around the car. If you want to take a closer look, here's our gallery.
Under the hood, the new Toyota Fortuner will get both diesel and petrol engine options that currently power the Innova Crysta, which we reviewed few month ago. While the diesel version comes with the meaty 177bhp, 2.8-litre GD-Series oil burner developing 360Nm of torque, the petrol trim gets the new 2.7-litre gasoline motor that makes 164bhp and develops 245Nm of peak torque. Both the engines come with the option of either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic transmission. 4x4 will be offered only in the diesel trim.
In terms of looks, the 2016 Fortuner gets an all new face with sharp wraparound headlamps with projector lights and LED daytime running lights. There is a V-shaped chrome grille up front and a beefy front bumper with chrome accented fog lamp enclosures that add to the SUVs aggressive stance. Furthermore, the character lines on the SUV's side profile are more subtle and the roof appears to have been lowered a little. At the rear, it gets an electric tailgate and LED tail-lamps. You can know more about the new Fortuner's features here.
As mentioned before, in India, the new Fortuner will compete with the likes of the Ford Endeavour and the Hyundai Santa Fe. While you'll have to wait a bit for our actually comparison review, till then you can take a look at our spec comparison report.
