Highlights

  • Renault is recalling an estimated 50,000 units of the Kwid
  • Whereas only 932 units of the redi-GO have been affected
  • Both cars share a large percentage of mechanical components
Renault and Datsun have issued a voluntary recall on the Kwid and the redi-GO hatchback. The recall has been announced to rectify a faulty fuel hose and clip that could result in disruption in fuel supply to the engine resulting in dangerous driving situations. The voluntary recall has been announced for both the Kwid and redi-GO as both cars share mechanical components under the skin.

In the case of the Renault Kwid, cars made between October 2015 and May 2016 are the units affected by the recall amounting to around 50000 total units. Since the redi-GO was launched in June, only cars made till May 18, 2016 are affected - a total of 932 units. Both cars are made in parallel at the Renault-Nissan Alliance factory in Chennai and share a large percentage of mechanical components.

The recall only affects the 0.8-litre model of the Kwid (shared with the redi-GO) and both Renault and Nissan will begin contacting customers of the respective vehicles in the coming weeks to carry out a free-of-charge replacement camp. The voluntary recall is a good direction by both manufacturers considering the fact that fuel system failures can cause a domino effect on other crucial drive systems like braking, steering and overall electronics. A leak in the fault hose or clip could also cause a life threatening situation in case of a fire.

The Renault Kiwd 1.0-litre has been launched a few weeks ago with a good response and the AMT version will be launched by the end of the year. The Kwid has sold over 56000 units of the Kwid in the last 6 months. The redi-GO has sold over 14000 units since its launch in June this year with a new redi-GO 'Sport' special edition launched in addition to the standard variants.
