Tesla's entry into India has been timed well, with a host of premium electric cars like Mercedes-Benz EQC, Jaguar I-Pace already on sale and the likes of Audi e-Tron and Volvo XC40 confirmed for a launch this year. While India has been slow to adapt to electric vehicles, with EVs forming less than one per cent of total vehicles sales in India, the coming of Tesla could have a positive impact for the EV segment in the country.

The Bloomberg report also suggests that Tesla is closely monitoring the developments with regards to EV policy and the Goods and Services Tax (GST) along with the production-linked incentive (PLI) program, ahead of beginning sales operations in the right earnest. Under the PLI program, incentives are likely to rise each year as India courts the biggest companies in the world to manufacture their products and goods in India and export them to other markets globally. The government of India recently approved Rs. 181 billion or $2.5 billion plan to boost battery storage capacity to 50 gigawatt hours.
