Scrapping an old car is always a tough procedure and was largely unorganized in India earlier. However, the Government has completely reorganized and institutionalized the sector with its scrappage policies for vehicles. Customers usually get 4-6% of the ex-showroom price as the scrap value while various components are removed by multiple stations. There are numerous concessions available if the scrapping certificate is shown.
Here are the stages in the process:
- Contacting the scrapping centre- You can reach out to an authorized centre for scrapping. After scheduling your appointment, take your car to the centre or they can even collect it from your address in some cases. Towing charges will of course apply in this scenario.
- You will have to handover all original documents of your vehicle. If there are no pending liabilities, the recycler will take the vehicle's responsibility legally. The vehicle will be weighed for working out the scrap value.
- The vehicle will be dispatched for scrapping. The CNG kit (if available) and tyres are first taken off and then the battery, followed by draining of the refrigerant from the AC unit. The de-pollution station then drains and collects all fluids including engine oil, brake oil, transmission oil, coolant, windshield washer, etc. The fuel tank is removed along with the silencer/muffler. The body panels and parts come off manually, followed by the interior components. The wiring system also goes off while another station separates the running gear. The vehicle is hoisted with the suspension, brakes and engine being taken off. The VIN plate is also cut out thereafter.
- With the bare car now available, the body shell is positioned into the crusher and the steel coming out will be sold later on. The other parts will be sold in the form of spare parts.
- Upon completion of scrapping, you will receive your certificate of destruction which you can use for de-registering the vehicle at the RTO. You will also get payment of the scrap amount. Those providing the certificate will get 5% discounts on buying new cars along with 25% discounts on road tax and total registration waivers.
